DANNY COWLEY has confirmed his interest in becoming Sunderland’s new manager.

The Black Cats are searching for a new boss in the wake of Phil Parkinson’s departure on Sunday evening, and Cowley has been touted as one of the leading candidates for the role.

The 42-year-old has been out of work since leaving Huddersfield Town earlier in the summer, but speaking to the Southend Echo, who cover his family base, he outlined his interest in taking over at the Stadium of Light.

When he asked whether he would like to be considered for the job, the former Lincoln City boss said: “Sure. Sunderland are a huge football club with a wonderful history. For whatever reason, they find themselves in League One, but we will just have to wait and see.”

Cowley, who tends to work alongside his brother Nicky, established his reputation by leading Lincoln to promotion from both the Conference and League One.

However, things did not go to plan at Huddersfield last season, and he left West Yorkshire after narrowly guiding the Terriers to Championship safety.

Cowley said: “We love football, and of course we miss football. We’re some enjoying some time off and it’s been a really good opportunity for us to go away and study.

“We’re continuing to try and improve and we’re working on our pro licence at the moment. We’re trying to make the most of this time.”
