How did the players fare in Sunderland's Carabao Cup defeat to Hull City?

SUNDERLAND (3-4-3):

6 Burge: Had very little to do over the course of 90 minutes, and didn’t really have a chance with any of Hull’s penalties

7 Willis: Looked comfortable on the right of the back three and strode out of defence effectively on a number of occasions

7 Wright: Will be charged with leading the Sunderland backline this season and was always in charge of what was going on

6 Flanagan: Never looked troubled defensively, but a few of his balls over the top were fairly aimless

6 O’Nien: Displayed his usual energy getting up and down the right, although his final ball was occasionally lacking

8 POWER: The pick of the Sunderland team as he drove forward from midfield and threaded some dangerous balls forward

6 Dobson: Was instructed to sit as Power pushed forward and carried out his duties diligently – got the nod ahead of Scowen

6 Hume: Should be an important figure down the left-hand side – delivered some useful balls into the area

6 Maguire: Was always looking to get on the front foot, but missed the best chance of the game when he shot wide

5 Grigg: His general play was pretty good, but ultimately his performance will be remembered for the missed penalty

6 O’Brien: Some of his footwork was fantastic, although he let himself down when he scuffed wide from a good position

Man Of The Match: MAX POWER – He might not have finished on the winning side, but the Sunderland midfielder was the controlling force for most of the game.
