JONNY HOWSON has signed a one-year contract extension with Middlesbrough.

The midfielder had been due to become a free agent next week, but has agreed to trigger a clause that extends his deal by another 12 months.

Howson started Boro's first game under Neil Warnock at Stoke City yesterday, and has been a major influence ever since joining the club in the summer of 2017.

He has made 133 senior appearances for the Teessiders, filling a variety of positions in midfield and defence.

With Rudy Gestede and Daniel Ayala having left, George Friend, Adam Clayton, Ryan Shotton and Marvin Johnson are now the only players still to resolve their futures beyond June 1, when their current deals are due to expire.
