NEWCASTLE UNITED are confident of agreeing short-term contract extensions that will enable Javier Manquillo and Andy Carroll to see out the remainder of the season with the Magpies.

However, while Danny Rose yesterday joined fellow loanee Valentino Lazaro in extending his temporary stay to the end of the campaign, there is a growing acceptance that Matty Longstaff’s Newcastle career will end when his current deal expires on June 30.

Rose’s short-term extension was confirmed yesterday, with Tottenham agreeing to prolong the full-back’s deal. Like Lazaro, who had already reached an agreement with Inter Milan, Rose will be available for Newcastle’s remaining nine Premier League games as well as their matches in the FA Cup, which could result in their season extending into August.

Steve Bruce is keen to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis this summer, but any contractual discussions with Rose and his representatives will have to wait until Newcastle’s ownership situation is resolved.

Mike Ashley will not be sanctioning any long-term decisions until the Premier League have ruled on the viability of Amanda Staveley’s proposed takeover, but the Magpies owner has given the green light for short-term agreements with players who are due to become free agents at the end of this month.

Manquillo and Carroll both fall into that category, and it is hoped the pair will sign new short-term deals in the next few days. Both players are understood to have verbally agreed to extend their current arrangements until the end of the season, with Bruce keen to use the duo in the nine league games that remain. Manquillo started Newcastle’s final game before the lockdown – a 1-0 defeat at Southampton – while Carroll is set to be fit for next weekend’s home game with Sheffield United.

Matty Longstaff’s position is more complicated as the 20-year-old midfielder continues to refuse to sign the contract offer he was presented with earlier in the season.

Longstaff is set to join Italian side Udinese when the transfer window formally reopens – potentially ahead of a loan move to Watford – and will therefore refuse to play for Newcastle beyond the end of the month.

Tellingly, he was not involved in either of this week’s practice matches, suggesting he will not form part of Bruce’s plans.
