A REPORT by the Saudi state news channel Al Ekhbariya claims the Newcastle United takeover has been approved by the Premier League.

While all signs have pointed to the nod being given for the deal to go-ahead, there has yet to be an official confirmation during the process of the fit and proper persons test being carried out.

But a Twitter post from the news channel, owned by the government and run by the Ministry of Media, read: “The English Premier League gives the green light to complete the Saudi acquisition.”

Amanda Staveley is at the head of the proposed £300m takeover, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund which is fronted by crown prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The PIF have assets totalling £260bn – which would make the Magpies the richest club in the Premier League, comfortably dwarfing even the Manchester City owners.
