NEWCASTLE UNITED have avoided Premier League opposition in the FA Cup for the third round in a row, with last night’s fifth-round draw having handed them a trip to West Bromwich Albion if they can see off Oxford United in a replay.
The winners of next week’s fourth-round replay at the Kassam Stadium will head to the Hawthorns for a midweek tie that will be staged between March 2-5.
West Brom, who are currently top of the Championship table, booked their place in the fifth round when Conor Townsend’s goal secured a 1-0 win at West Ham United on Saturday.
Newcastle’s last FA Cup meeting with the Baggies came in January 2010 and saw Newcastle crash to a 4-2 defeat despite a double from Andy Carroll.
They need to beat Oxford to set up a repeat trip to the Black Country, with the date of next week’s replay expected to be confirmed later today.
The stand-out tie from last night’s fifth-round draw sees Chelsea host the winner of the replay between Liverpool and Shrewsbury Town, who drew 2-2 on Sunday.
Manchester United will travel to either Derby County or Northampton Town, which could see Wayne Rooney lining up against his former club.
