AIDEN McGEADY’S future at Sunderland is in doubt after a training ground incident this week.

The Black Cats Irish winger, regarded as one of League One’s best players last season, is believed to have been told he can leave when the window opens in January.

Sunderland boss Phil Parkinson is expected to deliver an update on the situation at his pre-match press conference at 12.30pm today.

McGeady is not expected to be included in the match-day squad to face Blackpool on Saturday when Sunderland are desperate for a win to move up from 11th in the table.

The Republic of Ireland international is thought to have been involved in an incident at the Academy of Light this week, although the exact details remain unclear.

It comes after he was an unused substitute at Gillingham last weekend when Sunderland lost 1-0 – leaving Parkinson with just two wins from 12 matches at the helm.

McGeady and Sunderland team-mate Chris Maguire have come under fire from Sunderland fans since that trip to Gillingham after posts on social media.

The former Bolton and Everton man has a contract that runs until the end of next season.

* Update to come from Phil Parkinson later today.
