HARROGATE Town’s promotion surge took a battering when relegation-threatened Sutton United won 3-1 at Gander Green Lane.

Ben Wyatt fired an early effort just over the crossbar as Sutton attempted to go in front in the opening stages, while Will Smith headed over for Harrogate at the other end.

The hosts took the lead just before the half-hour mark as top scorer Harry Beautyman nodded Craig Eastmond's assist home from close range for his eighth goal of the season.

Josh Falkingham equalised for Harrogate midway through the second half but Wright restored Sutton's lead four minutes later as he netted from outside the 18-yard box.

Wright completed his double three minutes from time, securing United's second consecutive win and ending high-flying Harrogate's three-match unbeaten run, but they still sit seventh.

Victory moves Sutton two points clear of the relegation zone.

Harrogate: Belshaw; Fallowfield, Falkingham, Muldoon, Emmett, Thomson, Stead, Hall, Smith, Diamond (Kiernan 65), Hancox. Subs (not used): Smith, Cracknell, Bradley, Kerry.

YORK City boss Steve Watson has said he and his side will be looking at Saturday's 1-0 win over Alfreton Town as "the start of another run" and expressed optimism about the coming away fixtures.

Jordan Burrow struck the only goal of the game in the first half, meeting David Ferguson's cross at the near post and guiding in.

Victory means City keep pace with National League North leaders King's Lynn Town, who remain two points clear after winning at Gateshead, but who can be overtaken should York win their game in hand at Hereford on Tuesday.

The only downside of the victory - in which York looked more like their early-season selves - was the injury to Dan Maguire in the warm-up which Watson suspects will keep him out of the next two games.

Watson told the York Press: "We did exactly what we hoped to do, without scoring more goals.

"We were front-foot and started quickly with energy. We got down the sides and got balls in and around their box.

"We pressurised them and their keeper. There were a couple where the ball bounces back off us and into his hands and you're thinking 'is it going to be one of those days?'

"The goal was great, it was what we'd been doing earlier in the season.

York City: Jameson, Griffiths, King, McNulty, Newton, Ferguson, Bond (McLaughlin 78), Moke, Durrell (Green 68), Kempster (Langstaff 72), Burrow. Subs (not used): Whitley, Tait.

GATESHEAD were defeated 1-0 by National League North leaders King’s Lynn Town at The Walks Stadium.

Both sides had various chances to take the lead, but Adam Marriott’s 73rd minute strike proved decisive and condemned the Heed to a fourth straight defeat.

Gateshead were the first to try their luck at goal ten minutes in as JJ O’Donnell fired over the bar, before Dom Tear saw his shot denied by the Linnets.

Gateshead’s big chance came 11 minutes after the restart as Kayode found himself clean through, only for Alex Street to get down well to keep his effort out and the game goalless.

It was Marriot who broke the deadlock with his 22nd goal for the hosts, sliding the ball home after being set away towards goal.

Gateshead found the net directly from a corner late on only to have the celebrations muted after the referee judged there to have been a foul.

Gateshead: James; Nicholson, Lees, Williamson (Forbes 80), Barrow; Deverdics, Oliver (Preston 76); Tear, Olley, O’Donnell; Kayode. Subs (not used): Agnew, Guthrie, Nelson.
