BRAZILIAN striker Willian Jose has revealed how he turned down the chance to join Newcastle United last year.

The Real Sociedad man was linked a few times with the Magpies during Rafa Benitez’s time in charge at St James’ Park, but he claims to have rejected an offer.

“The Premier (League) is the best championship in the world but La Liga is not far behind,” said the 27-year-old. “For me, the best team is Real Madrid and then Barcelona.

“I could have been in the Premier (League) but I am in the right place. I want to play in the Premier League one day but for now I am happy here.

“I had an option to go to Newcastle last year (but) I am happy at Real Sociedad and I ended up staying (rather than going to Newcastle).”

Newcastle were understood to have offered somewhere in the region of £35m for Willian Jose but there was a reluctance to strike a deal. In the end Newcastle turned their attentions in January to his compatriot Joelinton, who they ended up signing in the summer for £40m.

The South American is not the only man to have claimed to have been the subject of interest from Newcastle.

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam has stated he was approached by Newcastle in the summer when they were searching for Benitez’s replacement. Newcastle officials have denied Stam’s version of events.

The Dutchman did not consider that path as he had already agreed to take over at Feyenoord, where he is still in charge and they sit mid-table in the Eredivisie.

Newcastle had been considering their options after Benitez departed to take on a new challenge in China after his contract expired in June.

Stam insists he was contacted about the role but had to decline because he had already agreed a deal in March to become Feyenoord boss, leaving Newcastle to then turn to Steve Bruce.

“You have been informed, because it is correct,” Stam told Voetbal International. “Newcastle United contacted me a few days after I agreed to manage Feyenoord. So it was not an option right away.

“I am a man of my word. It was beautiful and honourable, because the people in England apparently know what I stand for as a coach.”

Stam has already had one stint in England as a manager at Reading but was unable to lead them back to the Premier League. He returned to Holland to take over at PEC Zwolle last year.

Feyenoord are currently tenth in Holland after taking 14 points from their first ten league games. Bruce is looking to lift Newcastle out of the relegation zone this weekend when they face Wolves on Sunday at St James’ Park.
