SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):
8 J McLaughlin: Made three crucial late saves as Sunderland had their backs to the wall and commanded his area throughout
7 O’Nien: Offered a constant threat down the right and had a major hand in both of Sunderland’s goals
6 Willis: Produced a mixed performance – won some important headers, but was pulled out of position on occasion
6 Ozturk: Was outmuscled too easily at the start of the second half, but won some important tackles late on
5 C McLaughlin: Doesn’t look comfortable at left-back and was asked some serious questions throughout the first half
6 Leadbitter: Neat and tidy at the heart of midfield, even if he wasn’t quite able to dominate as he would have liked
6 Power: Struggled to contain Rochdale’s first-half breaks, but steadied the ship before he was withdrawn in the second half
5 Gooch: Took the wrong decision on a number of occasions, and was hauled off ten minutes into the second half
6 Maguire: Enjoyed the physical challenge and set up O’Nien for the cross that led to the first goal
7 McGeady: Scored Sunderland’s first goal with a neat finish, and set up their second with a back-post header that hit Wyke
8 WYKE: Had a hand in his side’s opening goal as he won a header, and made it two goals in a week with a clinical second-half strike
Subs:
7 Grigg (for Gooch, 55): Made a big difference when he came on and helped spark the move that led to Wyke’s winner
5 McGeouch (for Power, 65): Found himself forced backwards as Rochdale rallied gamely late on
Embleton (for Maguire, 88)
(not used): Burge (gk), Flanagan, Hume, Dobson, Grigg.
Man Of The Match: CHARLIE WYKE – The striker was handed his first start of the season, and responded with an effective display that was capped by the winning goal.
