STEVE BRUCE is understood to have resigned as Sheffield Wednesday manager this morning, ahead of an anticipated move to Newcastle United.

Sources claim Bruce has officially notified his employers at Hillsborough of his intention to terminate the one-year rolling contract he signed in January.

The 58-year-old’s assistants, Steve Agnew and Stephen Clemence, are also believed to have resigned from the roles, and are set to join Bruce on Tyneside.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley has spent the last few days trying to agree a compensation package with Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri.

Chansiri had been demanding around £5m before he would agree to release Bruce and his backroom staff from their contracts.
