Sunderland supporters at Wembley during last season's Checkatrade Trophy final
Sunderland have been drawn with Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United in the first round of the EFL Trophy.
The Black Cats have been placed in Group A of the competition – formerly the Checkatrade Trophy – having reached the final at Wembley last season.
Jack Ross’ side will discover the identity of their final group opponent on Friday, with the 16 invited Under-21 teams set to be drawn into their respective groups.
The first round of EFL Trophy matches are scheduled to take place in the week beginning September 2.
