A TROPHY bearing the name of a North-East football legend will raise cash for young people with mental health and learning disabilities.
Northumberland-born Bob Stokoe helped both Newcastle United, as a player in 1955, and Sunderland, as manager in 1973, to FA Cup success.
The third Bob Stokoe Shield game will be contested by Sunderland’s Under-23 team and Prudhoe United, who have appeared in both Northern and Wearside leagues.
Match proceeds from the match will go to Ferndene, an NHS inpatient centre on the outskirts of Prudhoe, where Sunderland AFC Football Academy trains its Under-12 Outreach Centre players.
It was that community link which sparked the idea for a fundraising football match for the shield.
The match is at Prudhoe’s Kimberley Park, on Friday May 3, at 6.30pm.
Tickets costing £4 for adults and £1 for children are available from the hospital, on (01661) 838400, or from Prudhoe Town FC, on (01661) 835900, or from Prudhoe Town Council Centre, on (01661) 835487.
