GEORGE HONEYMAN is winning his battle to be fit for Sunderland’s trip to Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.

Honeyman injured his hip in the first half of Tuesday’s Checkatrade Trophy semi-final win at Bristol Rovers, and was substituted before the half-time whistle at the Memorial Ground.

The Black Cats skipper did not train with his team-mates this morning, but is set to return to full training tomorrow and will be involved in the squad that travels to Wycombe provided he comes through unscathed.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross said: “George is good, he’s recovering well. He wasn’t out on the grass today, but that was more precautionary than anything else. As things stand, we expect him to train tomorrow with the group.

“It was just an impact injury at the time. It was quite a sore one, if you saw the height he went up to fall. It was sore at the time, but it’s healed well since Tuesday.”

Lee Cattermole and Reece James are both expected to return to the squad after sitting out Tuesday night’s win, but Alim Ozturk will once again be missing as he continues to nurse a groin injury.

Ross said: “Alim had a slight groin problem and didn’t travel with us to Bristol. It’s probably unlikely that he’ll travel again, but there’s nothing major to report.”
