GEORGE HONEYMAN is a major injury doubt for Sunderland’s weekend game at Wycombe Wanderers – but Lee Cattermole should be fit for the trip to Adams Park.

Honeyman suffered an impact injury to his hip in the first half of last night’s 2-0 Checkatrade Trophy win over Bristol Rovers, and was forced off on the stroke of half-time.

The Sunderland skipper initially tried to play on after receiving treatment, but was unable to continue after he went down for a second time.

Jack Ross does not expect his injury to be serious, but with just three days to prepare for the Wycombe game, Honeyman faces a race against time to make Saturday’s game.

Ross said: “It’s a knock on his hip – just an impact injury on his hip. We’ll have to see how he is over the next couple of days.

“We’ve got a quick turnaround between now and Saturday, although knowing George as he is, he’ll be absolutely determined to be fit.”

Cattermole was one of two players rested at Bristol Rovers’ Memorial Ground, with left-back Reece James also dropping out of the squad.

The pair are both nursing minor injury complaints, but Ross expects them both to be available for the return to league duty this weekend.

He said: “It was just minor knocks, Lee with his ankle and Reece with his groin. We hope and expect that they’ll be back on Saturday.

“We didn’t want to take any risks with them (at Bristol Rovers), and we also had good players who could fill in their place.”
