YORK City boss Steve Watson believes people will be tipping his side as play-off “dark horses” following a third straight National League North win.

A 2-0 home triumph over bottom-of-the-table Nuneaton Borough, courtesy of second-half Wes York and Hamza Bencherif goals, saw the Minstermen move up to 12th – the club’s highest position since mid-November.

The gap to the top seven remains seven but only Spennymoor, who have taken maximum points in their last seven league matches, are now on a longer winning streak than Watson’s men.

The ex-Gateshead manager told the York Press: “I always say you have to go out expecting to win and I think the players now believe they can win games.

“My message to them now is just to keep winning games, even if that sounds far too obvious. I dare say people are looking at York now and saying: ‘They’ve got a good squad of players and they could be dark horses’, and I hope they are doing.”

York: Bartlett; Griffiths, Mirfin (Bencherif 61), Newton, Ferguson; McLaughlin, Burgess, Moke; York (Harris 69), Burrow, Kempster. Subs (not used) Law, Bencherif, Wright, Harris, Whitley.

WARREN Burrell netted the only goal as Harrogate beat Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium to climb back into the National League play-off places.

Town went in front in the eighth minute when George Thomson crossed in low and Burrell, under pressure from Scott Boden, helped the ball on its way past Shwan Jalal.

In the second half, substitute Jerome Binnom-Williams helped reinvigorate the hosts' challenge.

He set up a couple of chances, and from one cross Tom Denton headed agonisingly against the post as Chesterfield saw their seven-match unbeaten run come to an end.

Harrogate: Belshaw; Fallowfield, Falkingham, Emmett (Motley-Henry 78), Burrell, Howe, Thomson, Beck, Langmead, Kerry, Muldoon (Williams 78). Subs (not used): Cracknell, Kitching, Woods.

GATESHEAD were left deflated in the dying seconds when National League leaders Wrexham scored a last-minute equaliser to earn a point away on Tyneside.

Steven Rigg headed in the opener just before half-time after his effort was initially saved by Christian Dibble and rebounded up in the air.

Wrexham struggled to get a foothold in a scrappy second half, but got their reward late on through Cole Stockton.

The Dragons missed the chance to open up a bigger gap at the top, while Gateshead dropped a place to seventh.

Gateshead: Pears; Tinkler, Kerr, White, Mellish, Williamson, Barrow, Olley (Hunter 80), Forbes, Thomson (Salkeld 84), Rigg. Subs (not used): Foden, Maloney, Devitt.
