Spennymoor 1 AFC Telford United 2.

Spennymoor’s dreams of a second successive quarter final appearance in the Buildbase FA trophy were dashed by Telford United at the Brewery Field tonight.

Moors couldn’t hit top form on a heavy pitch against well-organised opponents, who made it a north east treble having already beaten Darlington and Hartlepool.

The first real attempt of the game on a heavy pitch was on 12 minutes when Glen Taylor cut into the box from the right and hit a low left foot shot straight at Andrew Wycherley.

The keeper then caused a scare for his team when he slipped as he tried to control a back pass, and just managed to scramble the ball away as Taylor closed him down.

But Telford replied with a good move at the other end, which ended when left wing back Ryan Barnett worked his way into the box, but then blazed wide.

Moors then had a chance on 20 minutes when Callum Williams crossed from the left for Taylor to head just wide at the far post, and then on 34 minutes Stephen Brogan curled a free kick around the wall but into Wycherley’s arms.

James McQuilkin tried his luck for Telford from 25 yards on an increasingly-heavy pitch, but Matthew Gould saved easily in the Spennymoor goal.

Moors had a great chance on 50 minutes when Jamie Chandler broke in midfield and found Taylor on the right, and he played the ball on first time for sub Adam Boyes to run through on goal, but Wycherley blocked with his legs.

But Telford replied with a shot on the turn by McQuilkin, that Gould parried past the post.

The visitors took the lead on 56 minutes, when a corner came over from their left for defender Shane Sutton to volley in unmarked from six yards at the far post. Gould then denied Telford a second when Ryan Barnett dribbled into the box, and the keeper saved his shot low down.

That save was to prove vital, as Moors levelled on 58 minutes when Sutton lost control of the ball 30 yards out, allowing Taylor to pounce, and he floated the ball over the stranded keeper into the net for his 24th goal of the season.

But Telford nearly regained the lead from another left wing corner that again found Sutton unmarked at the far post, but this time he fired over from ten yards out.

Telford went back in front on 74 minutes. Barnett broke into the Moors box and hit a low shot that Gould parried on to the bar and Brown forced home the rebound.

As usual, Moors kept going to the end, and Wycherley pulled off a one handed save from a left foot shot by Taylor, then saved a low shot down to his left by Andy Johnson.

And right at the end, with Gould up for a corner, Taylor had a header cleared off the line.
