Goals:
1-0: Willmott (47, allowed to run and run before then curling a right foot effort into the top corner with the help of the keeper’s hands)
2-0: Amond (64, powered a terrific first time finish inside the top right corner from Willmott’s corner)
Referee: Stuart Attwell (Nuneaton) – not to blame for Boro’s demise unless people want to argue the rain should have led to a postponement! 7

NEWPORT COUNTY (5-3-2): Day 6; WILLMOTT 8 (Pipe 84), Poole 7, O’Brien 7, Demetriou 7, Butler 7; Labadie 6 (Dolan 74), Bennett 6, Bakinson 6; Amond 7, Matt 7. Subs (not used): Marsh-Brown, Sheehan, Hornby-Forbes, Crofts, Townsend.
MIDDLESBROUGH (5-3-2):
5 Konstantopoulos: Made numerous saves in the first half but then guilty of an awful error for the first of the night;
4 McNair: Just never looked comfortable in either the wing-back role or on the right of midfield
4 Ayala: Never looked comfortable from the first whistle and guilty of standing off Willmott for the opener
4 Flint: It just wasn’t the sort of night for any of Boro’s defenders to impress
5 Fry: Arguably the best of the bunch at the back but that’s not saying much
4 Friend: Found it hard against the star of the show Willmott who grabbed an assist and a goal
5 Clayton: Back in the team in front of the defence and never got to grips with the surface
6 Wing: Unable to make the impact he can in the final third even if he did lay on a great chance for Hugill
5 Howson: Like many of his team-mates, forced to chase the orange shirts rather than the other way around;
4 Assombalonga: Unable to make an impact at all in the final third and hobbled off on the hour
4 Hugill: Didn’t do enough to influence the game except for shave the post early on and had to make way with an injury in the second half
Subs:
Van la Parra (for McNair 46): Gave the ball away far too many times. 4
Gestede (for Hugill 56): Didn’t take his chance but might get more now. 4
Fletcher (for Assombalonga 60): Ran around a lot without threatening. 4
(not used): Lonergan (gk), Tavernier, Downing, Besic.
MAN OF THE MATCH: ROBBIE Willmott – showed the sort of attacking wing-play that Boro have cried out for all season.
