NEWCASTLE UNITED’S miserable run of results at Wembley continued, as they went down 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at the national stadium.

While the defensive outlook adopted by Rafa Benitez’s side was paying off as they kept out a dominant Spurs side, a goalkeeper howler by Martin Dubravka proved decisive.

Heung-Min Son created a yard of space to get a shot away on 80 minutes and the keeper, who seemed to have it covered, misread the shot and it bounced past him.

It now means the Magpies have lost eight successive games at Wembley since their 1955 FA Cup win.

Benitez stuck with the same starting XI from the midweek win over Man City, with a spot on the bench for new recruit Antonio Barreca, who was introduced as a late substitute.

Lucas Moura should have scored early on when he sent a free header wide from close range, as Spurs dominated possession and penned the visitors back.

Then Erik Lamela, from similar range to Moura, headed against the post.

Newcastle’s lone striker Salomon Rondon then found the frame of the goal, heading an inviting DeAndre Yedlin cross against the post after he started the move on the edge the penalty area.

Defender Fabian Schar came to the Magpies rescue when Eriksen flicked on at goal, Dubravka was beaten and the centre-half hooked off the line.

Ayoze Perez picked his spot and his curling effort was pushed out by Hugo Lloris.

But the mistake by Dubravka cost the Magpies a hard-earned point.
