SUNDERLAND have made a breakthrough in their search for a new striker.

They have finalised a deal that will see Tottenham youngster Kazaiah Sterling join on loan until the end of the season.

Sterling is a 20-year-old striker who has made two senior appearances for Spurs.

He has been on the bench in recent weeks, providing cover in the absence of Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, but the return of the latter from the Asian Cup means Mauricio Pochettino has allowed him to leave on loan.

The Northern Echo:

Ideally, Sunderland still want to bring in another more experienced striker too, having lost Josh Maja and Jerome Sinclair this month.

Here's what Sunderland boss Jack Ross has had to say about Sterling: "Kazaiah has risen to the various challenges he’s faced throughout his development in youth football, and he arrives at Sunderland ready to prove himself again."

Sunderland are also after John Marquis from Doncaster.

It's understood they've bid £2m for Marquis - and are waiting for a response from the Doncaster hierarchy.

Marquis is the joint-highest scorer in League One this season, having scored 16 goals.

Scott Wilson's View

"Intrigued by the arrival of Kazaiah Sterling. He is known to be highly regarded at Spurs but what sort of impact he will have in League One between now and the end of the season is a complete guess.

"He has worked around some top class players at Tottenham but time will tell how he can handle the strains of the third tier.

"It is hard to envisage Sterling starting much for Sunderland; that said, though, they are yet to get that more experienced striker over the line so Ross only has Wyke and Watmore available at the moment.

"Sterling needs to grasp his chance to make his mark."
