Spennymoor Town 1 Boston United 0.

Glen Taylor’s 23rd goal of a prolific season gave Moors their fifth successive win against Boston at the Brewery Field tonight.

Moors weren’t at their best though, and they had keeper Mattie Gould to thank for a couple of good saves. Nevertheless, they now have a firm grip on third place, and are just three points behind second placed Stockport with a game in hand.

New signing Liam Agnew, who was signed on loan from Harrogate last week and was at Boston earlier in the season, almost scored in the fifth minute with a strike from the edge of the box that flew just past the post.

But Boston, who scored five last weekend at Guiseley, hit back, and Jonathan Wafula, Gavin Allott and Brad Abbott all had fruitless efforts that didn’t trouble Moors keeper Mattie Gould.

And a free kick from specialist Stephen Brogan at the other end didn’t seriously trouble Boston keeper George Willis either.

There then followed a ten minute delay after referee John Matthews pulled up with a back injury and had to go off, so senior assistant David Carr took over in the middle and another assistant was found from the crowd.

When play resumed, Allott fired off target from a free kick for Boston, and twelve minutes into stoppage time Gould pulled off an excellent save from a shot by Max Wright.

Moors nearly scored straight after half time, when Tuton’s header was well blocked by Willis, and Mark Anderson, following up, put the rebound wide.

Boston responded when Allott broke away, but Gould pulled off another good save to deny him.

However, as he has so often this season, Taylor broke through on 53 minutes when Boston centre half Lewis Gibbens slipped, allowing him a clear run through, and he confidently beat Willis for his 23rd goal of the season.

There were more interruptions in play when first Boston’s Gibbens went off injured, followed two minutes later by Moors’ Rob Atkinson.

Boston went forward in search of an equaliser, and they had a chance through Andy Thanoj on 81 minutes, but Gould pulled off another good stop.

They should have equalised with four minutes left when Allott and Wright combined well to set up Nicky Walker who fired over the top from a great position.

Moors held on after that, even though there were six minutes stoppage time added on at the end of the game.

Gould, Williams, Atkinson (sub Thackray 61), Curtis, Brogan, Chandler, Ramshaw, Agnew, Tuton (sub Hall 69), Anderson (sub Johnson 77), Taylor.
