1-2: Anderson (90, close range header from a right-sided cross)

Bookings: Udoh (68, over celebrating), Daniels (79, foul); Donaldson (90, unsporting behaviour), Deeney (90, unsporting behaviour)

Attendance: 1920

Entertainment: 1/5

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-3-3):

5 Loach: Made an important first-half stop with his legs to stop Pools going two-down and was the busier of the two goalkeepers;

5 Richardson: A steady first-half before he was replaced at the interval as Pools changed formation to play with wing-backs

6 Magnay: Appointed captain and tried to set some sort of example at the back. Looked to bring the ball out of defence at times and prompt a poor midfield unit

5 Rodgers: Returns to Accrington after his loan spell ended and Pools will need to secure a replacement this week with the manager confident of getting someone in

6 Amos: An energetic opening when he saw a lot of the ball, but he seemed to tire and suffer from an injury in the second period;

6 Donaldson: When he gets the ball he’s one of few capable of doing something positive on the front foot, but didn’t do it enough

3 Featherstone: Difficult to see what he contributed. He’s not a midfielder who suits this manager’s game plan and he has had far better games

4 McLaughlin: Seemed bemused when he was replaced in the second-half, but another who played too many short passes of little impact or consequence;

7 JAMES: One who emerged with some credit. His willingness to run and chase puts some of his teammates to shame and was unlucky not to score with a cracking shot from 25 yards

3 Muir: Early-season promise has disappeared. Didn’t hold the ball up with any authority and again dropped too deep looking for the ball in the wrong areas for a centre forward

6 Kitching: Advanced role in the front three and did a lively job running at the opposition in a positive manner but replaced at the break in formation change.

Subs:

Hawkes (for Richardson 46): Hard to recall him having any impact on the game 4

Anderson (for Kitching 46): Scored late on and given a chance in a back three, but up against lively strikers 5

Kioso (for McLaughlin 58): Brought a bit of energy and drive to the right side as wing-back 6

(not used): Catterick, Scott.

AFC TELFORD UNITED (3-5-2): Wycherley 6; Streete 7, Sutton 7, White 7; Barnett 7 (McQuilkin 63, 6), Deeney 7, Royle 6, Daniels 7 (Morley 81), Knights 6; Morgan-Smith 8, Udoh 8. Subs (not used): Cowans, Brown, Barnes-Homer.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Amari Morgan Smith – as Richard Money observed, he showed the Pools team how to play as a striker at this level.
