Spennymoor 2 Blyth Spartans 2.

Spennymoor were disappointed to come away with a point from a thrilling clash at the Brewery Field.

Moors led 2-0 at one stage and looked comfortable for the points, but Blyth, who haven’t lost now in ten games, hit back with two goals in three minutes to go home with a point.

Moors manager Jason Ainsley said; “A mad five minutes costs us. I really couldn’t see Blyth scoring in the second half, but I wondered how crucial the miss by Andy Johnson would be at 2-0. I was really disappointed that we only came out of that game with a draw.

“The goals we gave away were terrible. I was disappointed with the experience that we have in the team, that we couldn’t keep the game at 2-0 and see the game out.

“Our lads were disappointed that the referee awarded Blyth a penalty, but I could see why he gave it, “It was a maybe a good game for the neutral, but we had more of the chances and should have made the game safe.”

The game moved from end to end early on, with Moors forcing a couple of early corners without success, while Aaron Cunningham fired wide for Spartans.

Mark Anderson, who was given a starting place after scoring on Saturday, almost gave Moors the lead when struck a first time shot from long distance that Peter Jameson held on to in the Blyth goal.

Moors took the lead after 18 minutes when Rob Atkinson, who scored on Saturday at FC United, came up for a corner and was in the right place to tuck the ball past Jameson.

The goal fired Moors up even more. It was nearly 2-0 a few minutes later when Anderson worked his way inside and fired goalwards, but Jameson saved well, and then Blyth defender Jordan Watson almost put a clearance from a Rob Ramshaw cross into his own net.

It was all Moors at this point, with Glen Taylor and Johnson both having shots saved.

Moors went 2-0 up on 41 minutes when Johnson turned neatly in the area and fired right footed across Jameson into the bottom corner of the net.

Nathan Buddle thought he’d pulled a goal back for Blyth just before half time, but it was disallowed for a foul on James Curtis.

Moors started the second half where they left off, and Anderson fired straight at Jameson from the edge of the box, then Johnson was just wide after being set up by Anderson.

But then Blyth turned the game on its head. They pulled a goal back through Cunningham after Jake Hibbs failed to clear a corner first time and he volleyed in on 62 minutes, then two minutes later Sean Reid levelled from the spot after Jamie Chandler brought down Dan Maguire, although the Moors player claimed there was no contact.

And it was nearly 3-2 for Blyth when Nathan Buddle found space to head towards goal from a Jarrett Rivers corner, and Henry cleared off the line.

Sub Adam Boyes nearly won it for Moors in the closing minutes when he tried his luck, but Jameson saved.

Gould, Hibbs, Atkinson, Curtis, Brogan, Chandler, Ramshaw (sub Hall 44 mins), Henry, Johnson (sub Kempster 84), Anderson, Taylor (sub Boyes 80).
