Chorley 1 Spennymoor Town 2.

Spennymoor’s season got even better when they beat league leaders Chorley 2-1 on Saturday.

Moors pulled off one of the best victories in their recent history when they beat York City 3-0 in midweek, and this triumph at Victory Park completed a perfect week which has ended with Moors in third place in the table, just one point off the top.

They climbed above Kidderminster, who surprisingly lost at home to lowly Southport, and are now just behind Bradford Park Avenue and Chorley.

Again, the victory demonstrated how strong Moors’ character is, as they came back from a goal down to win the game.

Delighted manager Jason Ainsley said; “It was a brilliant away performance. We soaked up a lot of pressure, but we were a real threat on the break.

“We showed fantastic togetherness and team spirit to come back from a goal down and win 2-1.

“I thought our subs came on and changed the game when it mattered. No sooner had they come than Rob Atkinson scored a great goal from a corner. I thought he and James Curtis looked very solid in defence.

“I thought ours was a definite penalty, the ball hit their player’s hand, and we could have had one earlier for a foul.

“It’s been a great week for the club. After we drew with Curzon last Saturday, I was concerned about the upcoming games against York and Chorley – and look what’s happened.”

There wasn’t much to choose between the two sides in the first half hour, and the first real chance of note came along on 24 minutes when Elliott Newby found space ten yards out, but Moors keeper Jonathan Gould saved well.

However, Moors had a great chance to take the lead on the half hour mark when Mark Anderson set up Rob Ramshaw with just keeper Matt Urwin to beat, but he put his effort over the bar.

Glen Taylor had an effort blocked by a defender, and then Moors had penalty appeals turned down when Stephen Brogan appeared to be brought down when he chased a return ball by Taylor.

In the second half, Chorley missed a great chance to take the lead when Josh Wilson put a diving header wide from just a few yards out.

That was the signal for some strong Chorley pressure, and they nearly took the lead when Newby hit a piledriver from 30 yards out, but somehow Gould managed to keep the ball out.

However, Chorley broke through two minutes later when Wilson broke away and set up Newby who fired past Gould.

But manager Jason Ainsley made two substitutions which gave his side some extra energy, and they equalised on 65 minutes when Rob Atkinson came charging in for a Brogan corner, and headed past the Chorley keeper.

And on 69 minutes they were in front, when Andy Teague was adjudged to have handled a Ramshaw pass – much to Chorley’s annoyance -- and the referee pointed to the spot from where Glen Taylor coolly scored his tenth goal of the season.

Taylor nearly scored a third with a shot on the turn, and then lost control of the ball when he looked as if he was clean through.

Chorley were furious with the referee again when he waved away handball appeals on 82 minutes, and Moors went down the other end through Shaun Tuton, who missed when he was clean through.

Chorley piled forward in the closing minutes, and Gould denied them with a great save at the end from Wilson.

Moors are without a game this Saturday, as scheduled opponents Stockport are in FA Cup action.

Team: Gould, Williams, Atkinson, Curtis, Brogan, Chandler, Ramshaw, Thackray, Johnson (sub Tuton 63), Taylor, Anderson (sub Boyes 63).
