How did the players rate in Sunderland's win over Southend?

SUNDERLAND (4-2-3-1):

7 McLaughlin: Wasn’t asked too many questions but when he did have to be alert he was;

6 Matthews: Allowed Bunn to get in behind him a couple of times and has played better of late

7 Baldwin: Largely commanding again even if there was an occasional error, like a silly pass in the first half

7 Flanagan: Booked needlessly on half way but otherwise was strong and will be difficult to take out when Loovens returns

6 James: Looked to get forward when he could and Sunderland should ask him to do that more as he was threatening;

8 CATTERMOLE: Excellent from start to finish, broke play up and played a lovely pass in the build up to opener

6 McGeouch: Not as effective as Cattermole but didn’t do much wrong in the middle;

7 Gooch: Sent over a lovely cross for the opener to record yet another assist this season

7 Honeyman: Lively behind the striker and finished like a centre-forward with a fine header

7 Maguire: Not as impressive until he struck an unstoppable 30-yard effort inside the top corner;

6 Sinclair: Didn’t do enough in the final third to look like scoring but worked hard enough

Subs

McGeady (for McGeouch 54): Tried to get involved and found the net. 6

Maja (for Sinclair 58): Back in action, could have scored and laid one on for McGeady. 6

O’Nien (for Gooch 74)

(not used): Ruiter (gk), Oviedo, Ozturk, Mumba.

SOUTHEND UNITED (4-4-1-1): Oxley 7; Demetriou 5, Turner 6, Moore 5, Coker 5 (Hendrie 21, 5); McLaughlin 6 (McCoulsky 66, 5), Dieng 5, Mantom 5, Bunn 7; YEARWOOD 7 (Kightly 79); Cox 5. Subs: Bwomono, Bishop, Robinson, White.

MAN OF THE MATCH: LEE Cattermole – is clearly enjoying himself at the lower level and is inspiring others around him, including the fans, with his approach.
