NEWCASTLE United Under-21s made it two wins from two in this season’s Checkatrade Trophy as they claimed a 2-0 win over Notts County at Meadow Lane.
With the recently-appointed Neil Redfearn watching on from the sidelines, the Magpies’ second-string claimed an early lead from the penalty spot. Tom Allan was fouled in the box, and Callum Roberts stepped up to convert the spot-kick.
Former Sunderland midfielder David Vaughan fired wide for Notts County in the first half, before Newcastle doubled their lead nine minutes into the second period.
Sean Longstaff teed up Danish striker Elias Sorensen, and the in-form striker fired home from just inside the box.
The win takes Newcastle to the brink of the knock-out stages, with the Magpies assured of a place in the next round provided they avoid defeat in their final group game against Grimsby Town.
Newcastle Under-21s: Harker, Cass, O’Connor, Watts, Gibson, Bailey, Longstaff, Allan (Juanito 89), Longstaff (Sangare 85), Roberts, Sorensen (Wilson 63).
