RYAN Winks is recuperating in James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, after undergoing surgery following a fall at Sedgefield on Tuesday.
The South Yorkshire-based jump jockey suffered damage to his neck and his back in a tumble from Presenting Streak, trained by his father, Peter, at the first flight in a two-mile one-furlong hurdle at the Durham track.
"I've chipped my neck and broke my back in two places, a C6 vertebrae and a T6, so it's not good," said Winks.
"They reckon I'll be out of hospital tomorrow night. They will re-do the X-rays and I'll see where I am in a week's time.
"I've come back from injuries before, but I'm not sure exactly how long I'll be out for. I'm thinking six weeks.
"I'm OK apart from feeling really tired and groggy and achy, but that's to be expected."
