Hereford 0 Spennymoor Town 3.

Spennymoor bounced back from their FA Cup disappointment with an excellent victory at Edgar Street.

Moors are now up to fourth in the table courtesy of their third away win of the season, and nobody could begrudge them it with probably their best performance of the season so far.

After taking the lead midway through the first half, they capitalised on Hereford having a man sent off, and kept a firm grip on the game.

Manager Jason Ainsley, who took his team to Herefordshire on the afternoon before, said; “I thought it was a thoroughly professional performance, much better than the one last week at Witton Albion.

“The lads played some great football and scored some good goals, and I was delighted for them after the criticism of last week. The first was a great header and Sparky finished brilliantly, and the second was some great interplay. We always know that we have little bit of pace to catch teams out when they come at us, and Adam has done brilliantly again for the third.

“It sends a message out to the rest of the league, we’ve won well against a team that was top in the early weeks of the season. It was a fantastic win, a clean sheet and three very good goals.

“What a place to win at. It was a great stadium with a great set up, and you can see and feel the tradition. You can’t fail to get a lift going to a ground like that.

“I was also pleased for the fans who made the long journey over to Hereford, it was the longest one of the season. I’d like to thank the chairman for allowing us to come down overnight, it made a big difference.”

Ainsley restored Mark “Sparky” Anderson to the starting line up in place of Andy Johnson, and he said; “He justified the decision to recall him to the team, he scored one and made one.

“He literally provided that extra spark to help us win.”

There were chances at both ends in the opening minutes, and Moors took the lead after 21 minutes.

Keeper Jonathan Gould put a long clearance downfield that was flicked on by Glen Taylor for Anderson to fire neatly into the bottom corner past Hereford keeper Martin Horsell.

The game turned further in Moors’ favour two minutes later when Callum Sainty went in two footed on midfielder Rob Ramshaw, and was shown a straight red by the referee.

And Moors took firm control of the game just before half time, when Taylor played a 1-2 with Anderson and curled the ball into the bottom corner for the second – his seventh goal of the season.

They nearly scored a third on the hour, but Horsell pushed Andy Johnson’s shot around the post, then Shaun Tuton fired across the face of goal.

They kept the game tight after that, and finished off the Bulls with two minutes left, when Johnson got away and set up Adam Boyes to score from close range.

Team: Gould, Hibbs, Curtis, Thackray, Brogan, Chandler, Ramshaw (sub Johnson 37), Henry, Tuton, Taylor, Anderson (sub Boyes 68).

Subs not used: Atkinson, Elliott, Williams.

In the EvoStik League Premier, leaders South Shields lost 3-0 at Warrington, while Whitby let a two goal lead slip at Grantham and lost 3-2.
