Witton Albion 2 Spennymoor Town 1.

Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley admitted that he felt badly let down after they lost 2-1 at Witton Albion in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Moors were subject to one of the surprises of the round against a team from a level below them, and Ainsley was far from happy as they fell at the first hurdle for the second successive season.

“I couldn’t complain about our performances in the league when we got beat, but I certainly can about this one in the Cup,” he said. “When we lost against Telford, we had a bad ten minutes, and when we lost at Bradford, I thought we should have won. On Saturday, Witton deserved to win.

“Eight or nine of our players didn’t perform. We warned them before the game about the need to battle, but we didn’t get out of second gear. It was a real damp squib after a really good month of league performances, and I thought they seriously let the club down. We gave them plenty of information before the game, they knew Witton’s strengths and weaknesses.

“Defensively as a team we were all over the place, we looked disjointed, and yet ironically we nearly snatched a draw.

“But we didn’t deserve a replay because of our performance – I’ve never seen the dressing room so quiet. So many players were a shadow of their former selves, when we had the ball we seemed to be so pedestrian.

“No doubt about it, the better team won. I feel sorry for our supporters and directors who travelled over there. For the first time for a long while, I feel really disappointed.”

Witton had the game’s first real chance when Moors keeper Jonathan Gould saved well from Rob Hopley as Moors struggled to find their usual rhythm.

Near half time, Witton’s Danny McKenna hit the bar, while Stephen Brogan was just off target with a free kick for Moors.

Moors looked as if they were more on their game in the second half when Glen Taylor hit the bar from a Jake Hibbs cross.

But they fell behind on 50 minutes when the referee ruled that Delial Brewster had been fouled in the area by a combination of two Moors defender, and James Foley scored from the spot.

It was nearly 2-0 when Anthony Gardner fired just wide, but sub Mark Anderson, on for Shaun Tuton, hit the post at the other end.

However, Moors were caught on the break with four minutes left when McKenna set up Hopley to score from a few yards.

Moors pulled a goal back when Ryan Hall touched in a low cross by Shane Henry, but that was nowhere near enough for them on a day that they will want to quickly forget.

Team: Gould, Hibbs, Brogan (sub Boyes 63), Chandler, Thackray, Curtis, Tuton (sub Anderson 72), Henry, Taylor, Ramshaw, Johnson (sub Hall 45).

Subs not used: Atkinson, Elliott, Williams.

Dunston UTS are definitely through from the EBAC Northern League after they beat Irlam 2-1. Liam Brooks scored twice in the first 20 minutes, while Mark Fitzpatrick also missed a penalty.

Consett must replay on Tuesday night after they drew 3-3 with Warrington at Belle View.

The Steelmen were 2-0 up at one point with goals by Luke Carr and Michael Mackay, but the EvoStik League side got back to 2-2. Arjun Purewal then put Consett back in front before Warrington equalised again.

Blyth had one or two shaky moments before they drew 3-3 at Nantwich, while Whitley Bay lost 5-0 at Altrincham.

South Shields, who had a great run last year, lost 2-1 at home to Stockport County after taking the lead through Carl Finnigan.

In the EvoStik League East, Marske United came from a goal down to beat Stamford 2-1, with goals by Callum Martin and Josh Rowbotham to put them second in the table behind Morpeth, who beat Carlton Town 4-0.
