How did the players fare in England's home defeat to Spain?

ENGLAND (3-5-2):

6 Pickford: Didn’t have a chance with either of Spain’s goals, but his distribution wasn’t up to its usual high standards

6 Maguire: Made a couple of charges out of defence, but switched off badly to play Rodrigo onside for Spain’s winner

5 Stones: Didn’t look comfortable as Spain’s attackers pressed him as soon as he was in possession – too many passes went astray

6 Gomez: Looks at home on the international stage and will push Walker hard for one of the three centre-half berths

7 Trippier: Picked up where he left off in Russia as he charged down the right flank and delivered some dangerous set-pieces

6 Henderson: Tried to hold things together at the base of midfield but found himself somewhat overrun in the first half

4 Alli: Struggled for form in Russia and was unable to take a step forward here – his place in the starting side must be under threat

5 Lingard: Tried to make something happen when he was on the ball, but needs to exert more of a n influence in the big matches

6 Shaw: Delivered a sensational pass for Rashford’s goal, but had some difficult moments defensively before he was forced off

8 RASHFORD: Was England’s best player by a distance as he drifted around the attacking third – converted his goal superbly

5 Kane: Still has to prove he can do it against the best defenders – didn’t have much of a sniff of goal but snatched at a couple of half-chances

Subs:

5 Rose (for Shaw, 53): Spent plenty of time on the front foot, but his delivery wasn’t always up to scratch

6 Dier (for Henderson, 64): Helped England get a grip of Spain’s attacking midfielders and should possibly have been on from the start

Welbeck (for Rashford, 90)

(not used): Butland (gk), McCarthy (gk), Bettinelli (gk), Walker, Alexander-Arnold, Tarkowski, Loftus-Cheek, Delph.

SPAIN (4-3-3):

De Gea 5; Carvajal 6, Nacho 6, Ramos 7, Alonso 7 (Martinez 87); THIAGO 9 (Roberto 80), Busquets 6, Niguez 8; Rodrigo 8, Aspas 6 (Asensio 68, 5), Isco 6.

Subs (not used): Arrizabalaga (gk), Pau (gk), Albiol, Azpilicueta, Suso, Rodri, Gaya, Ceballos, Morata.

Man Of The Match: THIAGO ALCANTARA – Who needs Xavi and Iniesta? Spain have a new midfield general who is every bit as polished and precise as his illustrious predecessors.
