Leamington 0 Spennymoor Town 2.

Spennymoor are now unbeaten in four league games thanks to two late goals by their substitutes at Leamington.

Moors have collected ten points from the last twelve available, and that has propelled them up to eighth in the table, just one point behind the play off places.

Moors have made a habit of scoring late goals thanks to their persistence and durability, and their two subs, Adam Boyes and Mark Anderson, earned them the points with two late strikes.

“I thought we put in a solid performance on a sandy pitch,” said manager Jason Ainsley. “It was a scrappy game, not much flowing football, but we kept battling away. The two subs came on and changed the game for us – it’s great when your subs are able to do that.

“Leamington didn’t create a great deal, but the ironic thing is, that when we went to Leamington and lost 4-0 last season, I thought we played better on that occasion.

“I was delighted with our defending, we have kept three clean sheets in five away games now. We’re always likely to score goals, and if we keep a clean sheet which we’ve done, then we’ve always got a chance.

“Leamington is a tough place to go to. They’ve got a very good manager, and they know what they’re doing. They very rarely get beat at home.

“That’s ten points out of the last twelve for us. The performances were always there at the start of the season, but as I’ve said several times, it’s all down to fine margins.”

Ainsley was delighted with Boyes’ contribution after he came on as sub, and said; “Adam came on and made a big contribution, that’s three goals that he’s scored for us. He’s had to be patient and wait for his chance, which he’s done. It was a great finish, and shows why we brought him to the club.”

There wasn’t much in a scrappy game punctuated by many stoppages until the 21st minute when Leamington struck the post through Matt Stenson, while at the other end Rob Ramshaw nearly caught out Leamington keeper Tony Breedon.

Dangerman Glen Taylor then nearly scored his sixth league goal of the season with a powerful shot that Breedon touched over the bar.

Leamington’s top scorer Stenson fired straight at Moors’ keeper Jonathan Gould at the start of the second half, and then he headed another opportunity into the keeper’s hands.

Jack Edwards then put an effort just over the bar, while Shaun Tuton got away and fired an effort just over at the other end.

Leamington had loud appeals for a penalty turned down for a tackle by Stephen Brogan, before Moors broke through in the last four minutes.

Adam Boyes, who had only been on the field for a few minutes, anticipated a Glen Taylor cross from the right perfectly to fire past the Southport keeper and put Moors in front for his third goal for the club.

And in stoppage time, Moors got their second when they caught Leamington on the break, and the other sub, Mark Anderson, scored at the second attempt after Boyes’ shot was blocked.

Team: Gould, Hibbs, Curtis, Thackray, Brogan, Chandler, Ramshaw, Henry, Tuton (sub Anderson 69), Johnson (sub Boyes 83), Taylor.

Subs not used: Williams, Elliott, Hayes.

Attendance 545.
