Buildbase FA vase

Newton Aycliffe are still alive in the Buildbase FA Vase after a goal deep into 90-minute stoppage time earned them a 2-2 draw at Bishop Auckland on Saturday.

Aycliffe were knocked out of the FA Cup partly thanks to a goal by the Guisborough keeper deep into stoppage time, so there was a heavy touch of irony when Daniel Kent was on target, and that was enough to give them something to hang on to in extra time for a replay on Tuesday night.

Newton Aycliffe manager Deano Browne said; “I thought that Bishop were the better side if I’m honest, but we defended well and stayed in the game. We missed some big chances at crucial times. We showed great character to come from behind twice and to score a last-minute equaliser was a great feeling after the torture of the FA Cup. We’re looking forward to the replay and hope we can get the neutral fans from the area to come and support us.”

Bishops had the better of the first half, the best chance falling to Michael Hoganson who struck the bar. But they took the lead just after the hour, when Callum Patton spotted Aycliffe keeper James Winter off his line, and coolly struck the ball over him from long distance.

But Aycliffe levelled through former Bishop player Ian Ward, who beat Nick Liversedge from the edge of the box.

Bishops were quickly ahead again with a great shot by Callum Patton, but they couldn’t finish Aycliffe off, and in the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of normal time Kent forced the ball home.

Bishop Auckland manager Ian Chandler said; “It was a very, very frustrating day. We dominated throughout, their keeper made numerous great saves, but we were extremely profligate and should have been out of sight. However, this is football and these things happen. We’re looking forward to replay on Tuesday.”

Willington had a good 2-2 away draw at Northallerton after extra time to set up a replay on Wednesday.

Mattie Moffat scored from a cross by new signing Dean Thexton to put Willington ahead, but Northallerton scored twice within six minutes through Nicky Martin and Chris Dickinson to go in the lead. However, Connor Winter levelled from a Moffat assist to force extra time.

Northallerton manager Darren Trotter said; “It was a game of two halves. In the first, we never got going and deserved to be at least one down. In the second, we were much more positive, took the lead and did enough to win comfortably.

“Unfortunately, we have to work hard again on Wednesday against a good side. We need to have the right attitude from the start.”

Chester-le-Street’s winning start to the season came to an end when they lost 5-1 at home to Ryhope CW.

Jack Oliver was on target for Chester when they were already 4-0 down, and manager Colin Wake said; “We were heavily punished by an accomplished first division side with good forwards who hit the target when they got a chance. We were guilty of standing off renowned forwards in our box and conceded poor goals defensively. The young lads in the team stuck at the task as Ryhope dropped off the pace and never gave up, but the difference in quality was quite evident. It was a hard lesson for some of them.”

Esh Winning were easily beaten 6-0 at home by four times winners Whitley Bay, and manager Tony Boakes said; “It was one of those days. We hit the crossbar and post before the officials got involved. The second half, we were well beaten but having to chase the game.” It could have been different if an effort by Esh debutant Luke Wilson had gone in instead of hitting the post early in the game.

Durham City have still only scored once this season after they were beaten 5-0 at home to Seaham Red Star, for whom Vinny Gash scored a hat trick.

Durham manager Mike Weston said; “We were good in places, but didn't react to the second ball, we go again on Tuesday.”

Darlington RA never really got going in their tie against Bedlington at Brinkburn Road and were easily beaten 5-0.

Guisborough were the day’s top scorers, winning 9-0 at Stokesley. Both Billingham teams went through, Synners by beating Knaresborough 3-1 and Town by beating Campion 2-0.

Thornaby went down 3-2 at Thackley, but Hebburn won 1-0 at Eccleshill.

Consett had a good 2-1 away win at previous winners North Shields, and Dunston UTS, another former winner, beat Heaton Stannington 2-0.

Second qualifying round draw to be played on 15th September includes.

Northallerton Town or Willington v Steeton, Ashington v Crook Town, Nelson v Tow Law Town, Whickham v Whitley Bay, Billingham Town v Birtley Town, Sunderland Ryhope CW v Dunston UTS, Bishop Auckland or Newton Aycliffe v West Allotment Celtic, Brandon United v Washington, Penrith v Charnock Richard, Hebburn Town v Billingham Synthonia, Ryton & Crawcrook Albion v Garforth Town, Guisborough Town v Barnoldswick Town, Bedlington Terriers v Redcar Athletic, Bridlington Town v Consett, Daisy Hill v Seaham Red Star.

Shildon lost their unbeaten record and their position at the top of the table against the team currently managed by their former boss Gary Forrest on Saturday.

The Railwaymen lost 3-0 at neighbours West Auckland, and they also had player-manager Danny Moore and keeper Shaun Newbrook red carded in the process.

West had the better of the chances in the first half, and they took a deserved lead on 41 minutes when Nathan Fisher fired a superb left foot shot into the top corner.

Shildon were reduced to ten men when Moore was dismissed for a foul on Steven Snaith, and with five minutes left Denver Morris set up Amar Purewal for the second.

Newbrook was shown two yellows, first for kicking the ball away and then dissent, and in stoppage time Purewal scored the third.

Forrest said; “It was a good win and three points, we need to make sure that we stay focused for the next two games.”

In the other first division games, Stockton won 2-0 at Newcastle Benfield thanks to two goals from Adam Nicholson, while Sunderland RCA beat Ashington 3-1.

In the second division, Tow Law were held to a 1-1 draw with Easington because of a late penalty. Ross Nicholson’s gaol looked as if it was going to be enough.

Tow Law manager Steve Murray said; “It was a great performance and feeling very hard done to with the award of a 95th minute penalty.”

Brandon are bottom and still without a win after they were beaten 2-0 at Birtley, while Washington drew 2-2 at Ryton and Crawcrook.
