NEWCASTLE UNITED (5-4-1):
7 Dubravka: Made plenty of saves and couldn’t do anything about the penalty or the winner;
6 Yedlin: Bit of a mixed bag; decent in spells with a great assist, but scored the winner for the Blues
5 Schar: Had defended well until the second half when he was booked and then conceded a penalty for tripping Alonso
7 FERNANDEZ: Picked up a caution on his full debut but held the defence together in Lascelles’ absence
6 Clark: Had a busy afternoon on the left of the three but linked well enough with the new boys
7 Dummett: Had to work hard down the left but did what he could and also attacked at times;
6 Ritchie: Put the work in like he was expected to but it was always going to be hard for him in the final third
6 Diame: Can’t be disappointed with what he did in the middle against a strong Chelsea
6 Ki: A satisfying first appearance from the start for Newcastle even if he would like to be attack minded more
6 Murphy: Did what was asked of him in a defensive sense and managed to get forward a few times in the first half;
6 Rondon: Deserves to be applauded for his performance for an hour as a lone striker asked to hold things up until support arrived
Subs:
Joselu (for Rondon 62): Headed in a second of the season with a sweet finish. 6
Perez (for Murphy 73)
Muto (for Schar (79)
(not used): Subs: Darlow (gk), Sterry, Atsu, Longstaff.
CHELSEA (4-3-3): Kepa 6; Azpilicueta 6, Luiz 6, Rudiger 7, Alonso 7; Kovacic 6 (Barkley 79), Jorginho 7, Kante 7; Pedro 6 (Willian 68, 5), Morata 5 (Giroud 65, 6), HAZARD 8. Subs (not used): Caballero (gk), Loftus-Cheek, Zappacosta, Christensen.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Eden Hazard – was here, there and everywhere to give the Magpies plenty to think about on his return to the side.
