Boston United 0 Spennymoor Town 2.

Spennymoor’s season finally sparked into life with an excellent and much-needed victory at high-flying Boston on Saturday.

It all came together for Moors at the sixth time of asking – some fluent attacking play with new signing Shaun Tuton prominent – and some solid defending to gain Moors’ second clean sheet of the season.

The victory lifted Moors up to 14th in the table, and with second bottom FC United of Manchester coming to the Brewery Field today, then another three points can put them into the top half.

“It was important to get a win,” said Ainsley. “The pressure was starting to mount, but everybody responded well to put in a really good performance. It was good to get the monkey off our back.

“We defended well against a team that was unbeaten until Saturday. We didn’t concede any sloppy goals, which have marred our recent home games. Away from home defensively we’ve done fine. We had a goalless draw at Chester on the opening day of the season, and were quite solid at Bradford PA even though we lost. On Saturday, we had to deal with a lot of crosses and setpieces into our box, and they missed a sitter at 1-0 which changed the game. We need to make sure that we defend well at home now.

“It’s all down to fine margins. If that chance had gone in, we would have been up against it, but instead we kept it at 1-0 and went on to score another.

“When we scored our second, we could have got another one or two, but we’ll settle for a win. The ironic thing is, we’ve played better than that and lost this season.

“We’re aiming now for six points over the Bank Holiday weekend, but we have to stay focused. I’m pleased for the players, because they’ve taken a bit of stick.”

Ainsley was impressed with new signing Tuton, who was signed from Chester.

“I thought he had a very good game. He was raring to go -- he set up the second goal, and created several other opportunities as well. Considering he hasn’t played for a long time, he did well. “ The opening of the game was fairly even with neither keeper in serious trouble, but Moors broke through on 18 minutes.

A simple ball forward was picked up by Rob Ramshaw, who kept his cool under pressure as he ran into the Boston box, and then beat Boston keeper George Willis with a low shot.

And it was nearly 2-0 when Shane Henry forced Willis into a good save from the edge of the box.

Another chance came along on the half hour mark when Ramshaw turned just outside the box and fired a low shot that Willis just managed to keep out.

But Boston nearly levelled from a setpiece move, that ended with Ben Middleton heading just wide from Nathan Arnold’s corner, and then again there was an escape for Moors when Nicky Walker set up Brad Abbott to pull the ball just wide.

Just on the whistle the impressive Tuton got away and fired just over the top.

In the second half, Jonathan Wafula put a good chance wide from another setpiece, but it was Moors who nearly scored the next goal in the game, when Rob Atkinson headed over the top from six yards.

But the miss wasn’t to prove costly, because Moors went 2-0 up on 78 minutes with a clinical left foot shot by Glen Taylor, his third of the season, from a Tuton pass.

It could have been better for Moors in the closing minutes as Boston disintegrated, with Willis making good saves from Ramshaw and Henry.

Midfielder Mark Anderson will be missing again, while Andrew Johnson is struggling with a hip injury for today’s game against FC United, who have won just once in five matches this season.
