AMAR VIRDI struck twice in three balls as Surrey enjoyed a four-wicket opening afternoon to edge ahead against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

The Specsavers County Championship leaders reduced the White Rose from 107 for two to 166 for six before they reached tea at 185 for six from 64 overs.

Off-spinner Virdi, 19, claimed the notable scalp of Che Pujara caught at short-leg for 23 and then trapped Harry Brook lbw two balls later as he played back to one that skidded on.

That left Yorkshire 107 for four in the 37th over during the first half of the afternoon.

Gary Ballance pulled Virdi for six to reach a 60-ball half-century, but he fell for 54 when he was bowled by Rikki Clarke as he offered no shot to one angling in from around the wicket almost eleven overs later - 139 for five.

Jack Leaning fought hard for 21 until he miscued a pull at Jade Dernbach in the 60th over.

But Jonny Tattersall has reached tea on 25 and Tim Bresnan eleven.
