SUNDERLAND (3-4-1-2):

5 Camp: Looked more secure than either Ruiter or Steele, but might have come for the cross that resulted in an own goal

3 Jones: Moved into a central-defensive role because of injuries to Kone and Clarke-Salter but didn’t look comfortable at all

4 O’Shea: Returned after missing the Birmingham game through an illness, but his lack of mobility played into Ipswich’s hands

5 Browning: Played on the left of the back three and won his fair share of headers despite Sunderland’s defensive struggles

4 Matthews: Unfortunate to score an own goal as he was unsighted, but struggled to close down Ipswich’s left-hand side

5 Cattermole: His effort can never be faulted, but his lack of pace was exposed as Ward crossed for Ipswich’s second goal

4 Robson: Looked out of his depth as Ipswich’s midfielders played around – Sunderland improved after Honeyman came on

4 Oviedo: Was badly out of position for Ipswich’s second goal, and his set-piece delivery was dreadful for most of the afternoon

7 EJARIA: Can be pleased with his debut, especially in the opening half-hour – was always looking for the ball, which is a start

5 Asoro: Preferred to Maja and linked effectively with Fletcher in the first half – dragged a decent chance wide of the target though

6 Fletcher: Improved the Sunderland attack following his loan move from Boro, and held up the ball well with his back to goal

Subs:

6 LuaLua (for Asoro, 58): Added some pace to the Sunderland attack after his introduction and tested Bialkoswki with a decent long-range shot

6 Honeyman (for Robson, 58): Saw more of the ball in half-an-hour than Robson had managed in 60 minutes

4 McGeady (for Matthews, 70): Didn’t have much of an impact as Sunderland tried to press in the closing stages

(not used): Ruiter (gk), Love, Gooch, Maja.

IPSWICH (4-2-3-1):

Bialkowski 6; Spence 6, Carter-Vickers 7, Chambers 7, Knudsen 6; Skuse 6 (Hyam 85), CONNOLLY 8; Ward 7 (Gleeson 75), Waghorn 7, Sears 6; Garner 8 (Webster 90).

Subs (not used): Crowe (gk), Iorfa, Celina, Carayol.

Man Of The Match: CALLUM CONNOLLY – The Ipswich midfielder ensured his side dominated the central area and were always in control of the game.
