Goals:

1-0: Woods (38, low angled finish after being picked out by Cassidy)

1-1: Lloyd (85, slid in at the far post to convert a low, drilled centre from the right)

1-2: Lowe (90, free header from close range after Loach palmed a header onto the bar)

Bookings: Marsh (68, foul); Magnay (82, foul); Harrison (85, foul)

Referee: Thomas Bramall (Sheffield): The odd confusing decision, but don’t they all do that? Certainly in the National League they do. Allowed the visitors to steal 12 yards on the free kick which brought the winner 4

HARTLEPOOL UNITED (4-1-3-2)

6 Loach: Quick off his line when he had to be to smother, and made saves when called upon to keep Pools lead intact;

7 Magnay: Combative and drove forward on the right. As expected he tired towards the end and should have been replaced by Ledger to freshen up the back four

3 Laing: Wanted to play football from the back, but he’s not good enough to do it. Distribution was wayward and slack in the main. Static as Lowe headed in the winning goal

2 Harrison: See above – but his needless challenge at the end brought about defeat. Another game in which he’s culpable in making costly mistakes

4 Deverdics: You expect his set-pieces to be better than they are and his defensive positioning wasn’t up to scratch as he was exposed for the leveller;

7 Donnelly: In the long-term absence of Featherstone, he’s a natural replacement. Covered plenty of ground in the holding midfield role;

6 Woods: Fleet of foot in midfield, took his goal well. A storming second-half run almost brought a goal, but he ran out of petrol as he made the opposition area

6 Munns: Uses the ball well and tried to make things happen. He tired as the game went on and probably should have been taken off to liven things up

7 NEWTON: His best display in a Pools shirt, full of movement and wanted the ball. Not afraid to shoot when presented with the opportunity;

4 Cassidy: Second best to centre-half Lowe, who won header after header against the striker. Could have done with a rest in the last 20 minutes.

6 Oates: Put himself around, direct and like the others attacked positively

Subs:
Hawkins (for Woods 85)
Rodney (for Donnelly 90)
Adeloye (for Munns 90)
(not used): Adams, Ledger.

MACCLESFIELD TOWN (4-5-1): Jalal 5; Hodgkiss 5, Lowe 7, Pilkington 6, Fitzpatrick 5; Lloyd 6, Whitaker 6, Burgess 4 (Wilson 65, 6), Hancox 4 (Durrell 53, 5), Whitehead 5; Marsh 7 (Kennedy 90). Subs (not used): Ramsbottom, Kennedy, Arthur.

MAN OF THE MATCH CONNOR Newton – a driving force in midfield, allowed to attack and not afraid to shoot when he had the chance.
