Cleethorpes 1 Spennymoor Town 2.

Spennymoor manager Jason Ainsley wants one of the big guns in Monday’s first round draw in the FA Buildbase Trophy after holding on to a 2-1 away win at Cleethorpes on Saturday.

Moors were lacking in front of goal when they lost to Leamington in the league last week, and they could have scored more on Saturday because they were well in control for most of the game against the EvoStik First Division South outfit, that reached the FA Vase final last season.

“We want to play one of the big teams now. I would love to play Hartlepool because my assistant Tommy Miller used to be there, or Tranmere or the holders York City,” said Ainsley.

“But overall, I don’t mind who we play. If we’re going to do well in this competition, then we have to beat teams from the league above us.

“I thought we put in a very professional performance at Cleethorpes, and we controlled the game from start to finish. We could have finished the game earlier than what we did, because we had enough chances to do so. Cleethorpes didn’t really cause us problems until near the end.”

There weren’t many chances in the first half, with Moors not making any sloppy defensive mistakes like last week, and they nearly scored at the other end through David Foley.

They took the lead on 35 minutes when Matthew Dixon put a good ball over the top of the Cleethorpes defence for Ryan Hall to run on to and slot past the keeper, although the home side claimed there was a handball in the build up.

In the second half, Hall and Rob Ramshaw missed chances for a second, then Graeme Armstrong and Hall both had efforts cleared off the line.

The home keeper then made a good double save from Mattie Dixon and Chris Mason, but he had no chance with three minutes left when sub Andy Johnson broke clear and neatly tucked the ball home.

Luke Mascell pulled a goal back in the last minute, but Moors made sure that they didn’t have to come back home and face a replay.
