ENGLAND made an explosive start as play finally got underway on the second afternoon at Riverside.

Ryan Sidebottom removed West Indies skipper Daren Ganga with the very first ball of the game as the tourists were reduced to 92-4 at tea in the final Test.

Sidebottom claimed two of the wickets, bowling Devon Smith for four after Ganga had turned his opening delivery straight to Alastair Cook at short leg.

Matthew Hoggard trapped opener Chris Gayle leg before for 28 and Durham paceman Steve Harmison removed Runako Morton for six as the West Indies collapsed to 55-4 thanks to a combination of ill-judged batting and a lively England attack.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who launched something of a comeback after being dropped by Ian Bell on ten, is unbeaten on 37 and Dwayne Bravo has accumulated a patient 14.

But with another 39 overs still possible before the close of play, England will be hopeful of making further inroads this evening.
