NEWCASTLE UNITED are set to make Atletico Madrid full-back Jesus Gamez their fourth signing of the summer.

With doubts over the future of Holland international Daryl Janmaat, Rafael Benitez is close to completing a deal for Gamez, a 31-year-old right-back who can also play on the left-hand side of the back four.

Gamez joined Atletico Madrid from Malaga in a £4m move in 2014, and made 14 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side last season.

He has been linked with potential moves to Everton and West Ham in the last week, but Benitez’s Spanish links appear to have enabled him to steal a march on his rivals.

Born close to Malaga, Gamez made more than 250 senior appearances for his hometown team, captaining them as they qualified for the Champions League.

He represented Spain’s Under-23 team at the 2005 Mediterranean Games, but has not received a senior cap for his country.

He is set to travel to Tyneside to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms, and should become Newcastle’s fourth summer signing, following the arrival of Mats Selz, Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie.
