SUNDERLAND could be forced to cut their losses if they decide to grant midfielder David Moberg- Karlsson’s wishes to leave the Stadium of Light after only 12 months on Wearside.

The Sweden youth international was the first of 14 signings under former director of football Roberto de Fanti’s disastrous watch last summer when he arrived at the Stadium of Light in a deal worth £1.7m.

Moberg-Karlsson was regarded as a highly-rated prospect when he put pen to paper on a four-year contract on Wearside after making a name for himself at IFK Goteborg, but despite life at Sunderland getting off to a promising start, his situation changed dramatically.

The 20-year-old scored in Sunderland’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in the Asia Trophy during pre-season and netted on his first competitive appearance in the 4-2 Capital One Cup win over MK Dons. However, that would prove to be his only appearance in red and white with Paolo Di Canio sacked less than a month later. The Italian was replaced by Gus Poyet and under the Uruguayan, Moberg-Karlsson was restricted to development team action before moving to Kilmarnock on loan.

It is understood Poyet is keen to move the midfielder on this summer as he looks to bring in his own players, but the Black Cats would almost certainly have to accept a loss if they decided to sell him on.

A loan deal would suit the Wearsiders better and Moberg-Karlsson is also keen to move on in order to resurrect his career, but the player would prefer a permanent deal according to his agent, Per Jonsson, who is also in the middle of sorting fellow countryman Seb Larsson’s future.

He said: “What David wants is to find a club that would have him as they see him as the offensive player he is. The problem lies in that Sunderland must take a loss.

“They do not want to sale him out. Of course he is expensive. Exactly what he's worth, I would not go into.

“But if you buy a sofa for 10,000 Krona you do not put it out for 300 Krona a few weeks later. The thing is that everything is in Sunderland's hands.

“We talk to them all the time, pretty much every other day, with Sebastian (Larsson) and David.

It can get a loan, but we're not so keen on it.

“I do not think David wants to be loaned again. We want to find a permanent solution so David gets peace and quiet for a while.”

After committing his future to the club until 2016, Poyet will continue his search for reinforcements with several positions up for strengthening.

The Black Cats head coach has allowed Kieran Westwood to leave on a free and he has already been linked with moves for Manchester City’s Costel Pantillimon and Crystal Palace’s Julien Speroni.

Norwich City’s John Ruddy has also emerged as a potential target. The England international insisted he was committed to the Canaries despite their relegation to the Championship, but after missing out on a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad he may be forced into a re-think.

Poyet is looking for a keeper that will compete with Vito Mannone for the number one jersey, but he is also looking for reinforcements in other areas.

Meanwhile, Sunderland red and white army has been voted as the best in the Barclays Premier League, after topping the annual Fair Play Table for fans’ behaviour.

Delegates in the Barclays Premier League assess the behaviour of fans at matches, with points being awarded for positive verbal support and recognition of outstanding play by the opposition, as well as respect for match officials and opposing fans.

Sunderland AFC will receive £20,000 from the FA Charity Committee.
