WHEN I offered Christopher Wardell my old RAF tunic I had no idea that it would involve the Durham Light Infantry for whom I have the greatest admiration (HAS, Jan 23).

In his reply to my letter, Mr Wardell had the gall to suggest that my time during the Second World War was spent in a cosy office.

As an RAF wireless operator my time with the British Expeditionary Force in France was spent in a wireless tender and during the retreat to the coast in June 1940 I was issued with a rifle, a bayonet and 40 rounds of ammunition.

I also served in Egypt, in the western desert as part of a four year tour abroad.

Following that little lot, I also served in Burma, India, Singapore, Sumatra and Ceylon.

I am sure that my son would be proud to wear my six medals, and, if Mr Wardell continues to have his often puerile letters printed in HAS, then I hope to be given the courtesy of a chance to reply.

Bill Callen, Richmond.
