HAVING written very few letters to The Northern Echo in recent months, and having taken no part in the recent squabbling between Christopher Wardell and his various detractors and admirers, I was a little surprised to find myself at the top of Peter Jeffries’ list of regular correspondents who “write piffle about each other” (HAS, June 25).

It is true that some of my letters, particularly on the subjects of war, Islam, immigration, racism and the BNP, have led to a lively exchange of views with other correspondents, but I have tried to respond to my critics with courtesy, and without resorting to personal abuse.
