REGARDING your article about revised plans for a proposed new hospital at Wynyard published on Thursday, January 27.

Using the figures quoted, it appears that previously a case was put forward for a hospital costing £458m, providing 634 beds.

The current revised scheme is estimated to cost £299m and will provide 626 beds.

The cost per bed has been reduced dramatically from more than £722,000 per bed in the original scheme to under £478,000 per bed in the latest scheme.

If bed spaces can be provided for the lower figure it is no wonder the original scheme was kicked into touch by the Treasury.

How many thousands have been spent employing consultants to redesign and recost the scheme?

And how many man-hours have been wasted at the hospital trust attending meetings and briefings on the subject?

I wonder if the the original brief given to the designers was too open-ended or just too extravagant?

It would seem that a great deal of time and money has been wasted.
