PLEASE note that in my letter on the subject of HAS contributors (HAS, Jan 15) I wrote that our country has been run “unsustainably”, not “unsuitably” as printed.

However, regarding suitability, what about a memorial for Margaret Thatcher? I am not a fan of hers, like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and suggest a water fountain – a reminder of her water privatisation bill.

Remember, her Utopia, the US, has kept water under government control, considering it too important to be under sleazy private sector control.

Living alone in a flat, I pay £5.30 a week for water services.

Prior to this, the charge was so small that it never registered.

Then, we paid Sunderland and South Shields Water Company for a better service and water quality. Now, we have a French company selling us our own water at a huge profit. Even worse, I believe the French government is the company’s main shareholder.

In France, they believe in a small charge for utilities’ services to help their citizens and companies. It makes sense.

F Evans, Sunderland.
