JOE BIDEN’S inaugural speech, as the 46th President of the United States, was a tour de force; here was a man highlighting matters about which so many care.

Biden said: “There is no accounting for what fate will deal you” – such an important statement as, whether rich or poor, your child can die, a fatal illness can be contracted, a job can be lost and your mental health can break down.

Regarding social media and statements made by leaders, I loved his “facts are manipulated and indeed manufactured – lies told for power and profit”. He said: “We will lead by the power of our example” and “we will repair our alliances”.

He undertook to represent all citizens, something our government and our parish/town councils have to realise if we are to save democracy. He referred to important issues, the climate crisis, the surge of systemic racism and health care for all. Already Biden has signed orders ending key Trump’s criminal policies.

This year, in particular, I have felt that there is no point in struggling on; Biden has renewed my hope for a better world.
