CAN something be done about the bedroom tax please? It never was needed in small provincial industrial towns. Many of our young people migrate to the south-east to find work anyway.

Our lovely old towns are being knocked about by excitable landlords trying hard to fit in with government housing benefit regulations. Houses for multiple occupation are being shoehorned into retail units and into lovely old Victorian villas. We are standing by and watching as builders are recreating the slums our parents and grandparents swept away in the 1960s and 1970s.

It really is time to end the bedroom tax now before great harm is done to the townscape of provincial Britain and more importantly, the people in it.

Cllr Nigel Boddy (LibDem), Darlington.
