SEEING that an elephant-sized fatberg has been removed from a sewer in London (Echo, Oct 30) which was 30 metres long reminded me of the late great John Peel who narrated a programme called A Life of Grime.

He also wrote in the Radio Times about the Silesians, a race who lived in the sewers of Prague after being persecuted. They made a living by scraping oils and fats off the walls of the sewers and selling it to the restaurants in Prague.

So sorry if you are eating your breakfast as you read this but it is true!

Spare a thought for our council workmen who have to clear these huge obstructions in our sewage system and don’t pour fat and oil down your sinks!
