SO in yet another of Boris Johnson’s frequent U-turns (I’m afraid that I’ve lost count of how many there have been now), we are to have another national lockdown.

However, having rejected the earlier scientific advice for a short “circuit-breaker” lockdown, as supported by Sir Keir Starmer, this lockdown will be much longer, and may well last beyond December 2 (what price Christmas?).

Again the Government has reacted too late, and now Covid-19 is completely out of control, and the cost will be yet more unnecessary deaths, and further damage to the economy and people’s livelihoods.

However, my greatest concern is that worldwide experience shows that the only way to control Covid-19 is with an effective locally-based ‘Test, Track and Trace’ system, whereas our so-called “world-beating” nationwide system has proved to be an expensive failure. Unfortunately there is no sign that the Government has realised that it needs to fix this, which would require that it drops its ideological obsession that free enterprise is always best, and instead relies on local authorities.

Thus I fear that we will be condemned to a never-ending cycle of lockdowns and relaxations, and ‘here we go again’ will become the nation’s weary call (at least until a reliable vaccine is developed, which is probably years away).
