THE latest edition of the Office for National Statistics Pink Book for 2019 Goods and Services makes interesting reading.
In particular we can see how dependent several EU countries are on exports to the UK.
Just over 60 per cent of our total imports come from EU countries with Germany leading the way.
They alone are the source of 14 per cent of the UK’s imports, followed by the Netherlands (8.3 per cent), France (7.3 per cent) and Spain (5.6 per cent).
The total value of exports from the EU to the UK was £341bn, well in excess of our trade with them at £274bn.
Why would the EU negotiators put such an imbalance at risk by taking a hard line with its most important customer?
